FireFall: The game…

In one word. Wow!

This first person shooter is almost addictive. The headshots. The shooting enemies and rushing their position to snag that health powerup or some extra ammo because you just spent the last 2 minutes dodging fire and shooting heads. The random encounters with the uber-evil (forgot their name) and the constant monsters to shoot. There is almost never a bit of lag.(except through the PAX week while the Devs were incomunicado)

The special seasoning as far as i’m concerned is the friendly players. Since PvP is limited to arena play only its a very player vrs environment game. Its us against it… And because the maps open up in response to player actions its not like the players are stuck waiting for the expansion to be released.

The classes are very well balanced so far. Though i wish that the engineer could bring down a resupply station instead of a jump pad. (Love the turrents, wish that engineers could have more than three)

Growing in my window farm

October

A couple months back at the end of october I assembled a window garden based on the plans from http://www.windowfarms.org/buildyourown .

HDR window garden pic

The window garden next to my seedling trays

So Margo and I planted two trays with a combination of Malibar spinach, 2 kinds of parsley (italian and curled), Swiss chard, and basil. and when the seedlings had a couple weeks of growth I transfered them over to the farm.

November

In the middle of November, I made a pair of videos showing the growth in the farms.  They are going up on youtube soon.

Here is a video

Capella is a scam!

I have been studying for a MS in Information Security and Assurance at Capella University in MI.

I might quit Capella because:

  1. It is a for profit university scam. ( http://www.alternet.org/economy/148166/the_for-profit_college_scam_–_pocketing_tax_dollars_and_subsidizing_economic_inequality)
  2. I am now convinced that the MS in Information Security and Assurance at Capella is  not a practical degree.
  3.  The classes that I was enrolled in consistantly had great titles like; Technical communications (an english writing class that I got a B in), Intro to Enterprise Application Architechture (I had to retake once and got an B the second time), ethical and legal considerations in information technology(A), Managing people and technology (B), Enterprise security (A), system development theory and practice(B), and security management practices(which i quit during because of frustration). But the classes discussions consistantly had little to do with the course title. The primary focus tended to be how to manage employee’s and upper level management. Which, while important, was not why i wanted a MS degree ( I have years of management experience already) The security management practices course was kinda interesting but it kept focusing on remedial subjects like “describe two encryption schemes”. Really! in a security management practices course. In addition, many of my fellow classmates in that final class felt similarly disgusted with the level of teaching and the class assignments (both the subject matter and the vague unresponsive descriptions of the assignments). Similarly, I feel safe in concluding that the teacher was unresponsive to inquiries as to the meaning that the assignments required. see the included in class emails that I copied.
  4. I have a personal liking for the teacher in the last class ” Maurice Dawson” because of his twitter postings. @drmauricedawson He seems to be intimately connected to real IT and Information Security. But, see the previous point as to his teaching performance.
  5. None of my other 6 teachers shared as  much of themselves as Maurice. Perry Hoekstra came close by sharing his linkedin profile and his gchat username. Therefore, I was able to ask perry questions whenever I wanted.

Hey Andy,

I am glad you provided the blistering review. I am going to as well. You hit the nail on the head…the questions are obtuse and just downright stupid. I have not learned ANYTHING from the assignments, to include this last one, which, by the way, had barely anything to do with the other four. At least some of the discussion board questions were somewhat educational. It was the responses that made them interesting.

This is the one I am having problems with that I asked the instructor about (no response from him):

What are the threats and mitigations of the violation of property rights?

This could go in so many different directions. What property?? Our house? Car? Land?? Based on chapter 10, I am thinking he means INTELLECTUAL property rights, but even then, the question makes no sense whatsoever. So I am going to answer it based on how I think it should be answered. SO, SO SICK OF THIS!!!

It has been painfully and disturbingly obvious that the questions were not written by someone who understands the course materials. Was this the instructor, Capella, or someone else???
|
I, too, am very disappointed with this course and, like you, saddened by everyone’s disappointment. I am going to send my admissions counselor and student advisor emails discussing this very topic. In it, I am going to tell them that at this point and time I could not, in good faith, recommend Capella to anyone now. That makes me quite sad because until now I have had a wonderful experience and have met some truly wonderful folks.

| >> Looks like I’m going to get a B (if I’m lucky) in this class.
|
| I have remained quite but have been monitoring this email thread. I am in the same boat as Leah. On assignment #6 I got a 0 on one of the five sections for not addressing NSA CNSS. When I wrote to him pointing to relevant sections of the documents and asking for clarification I got no answer. Now I am luck to get a B.
|
| My final evaluation was blistering about the instructor and the course. The questions did not seem to have been written by someone who understands the course materials nor how to correctly structure questions.
|
| For example “What is the plan for business continuity and disaster recovery?” Huh? not how do you develop? what are the elements of?
|
| I am very disappointed with this course and I am saddened to see how may others are too. I need to finish (I already took a break once) so that my kids can see me finish. I think the economic hard times have been especially hard on Capella, I remember it being better before 2008 when I was taking courses the first time.
|
| Good luck to you all and for those of you luck enough to be through, congratulations.

High priority

Bill,
I echo your sentiments to the tee…practically verbatim, in fact. I have second guessed myself CONSTANTLY throughout this course as I have yet to understand what it is he wants for the assignments.I say this with a humble heart…I consider myself an intelligent person. I was an analyst for 20 years in the military and  had to often connect the dots when there did not seem to be any connection and I was good at it. In this class, the dots, from my perspective, are all over the place and there is NO connection. The last assignment is a prime example…he jumped back and forth between SYSTEMS development and SOFTWARE development..at least that is how I saw it. For the life of me, I could not figure out what he wanted so I guessed and I am probably getting an F on the assignment.Moving forward, I am going to start on the last assignment this week and I am going to ping him with questions. I urge others to do the same. I have grown weary of his haughtiness, trying to read his mind, and what I perceive as “I’m superior because I have a PhD” comments, namely his first one to me that CIA has not been used in years…yes, it HAS and just in my last course back in the Spring.I have had one or more classes with nearly everyone in this class and I know full well what kind of work you all have done…nothing less than spectacular so if anyone gets a grade that does not reflect that, the problem is not with you. For those who I’ve only just met in this class, again, your work has been nothing less than spectacular and your grades should reflect that. One classmate already dropped the class and is probably not going to return to the program at all. If I had had this instructor early on, I probably would have done the same. We all have paid a whole lot of money for this degree, many going into an ungodly amount of debt…we deserve better than this.

| Thought I would finally chime in.
|I will be a capstone away from completing my degree program when this course is done. I have no doubt that I will pass this class, but that is not my largest concern. It is what has occurred since this course has begun that has me a bit angered. Regardless of your GPA before this course began, I believe we all were proud of what we had accomplished before this course began. Sadly, afterwards I get the feeling that at least the majority of us have been wrought with ambiguity and confusion.
|I have always considered myself a latent geek, and I have had no difficulty comprehending the subject matter or material within this program. Even if an issue arose that made me pause, i always relied on the fact that the instructor would break things down and make it relatively easy to move on. If I did not understand something the feedback provided would enlighten me and allow me to advance with a better understanding. Unfortunately, the feedback never came. On more than one occasion I requested an explanation when I received a less than adequate comment on an assignment. I received responses like, “I like to give the benefit of the doubt on the first assignment, and afterwards I start taking points off”. FOR WHAT?
|We are all adults who have led productive lives. We have held differing professional positions, made decisions, and been asked for opinions to advance a cause. Yet, when it comes to getting feedback on whether we are heading in the right or wrong direction, we are only afforded a pompous response suggesting we review what we have already spent lengthy periods of review on just so we can receive a less than anticipated grade on.
|I finally received grades for my discussions over the past weekend. This was only after making a second complaint to my academic advisor about the lack of participation on the part of the instructor. I am grateful that you all, my classmates have provided great feedback on my discussion posts since I never received any from Dr. Mo. When I receive a response indicating I need to review a website (that he is associated with) to get a better understanding of the subject matter, I believe I got it all wrong. When I compare my posting to the material and responses from other classmates I find I got it right, but the never received adequate feedback. This class has caused me to second guess myself in almost every aspect.
|I plan to write a small novel to express my disappointment with this class (as repetitious as it is), and the lack of support I have received from the academic staff and school chair. I was brushed off in my first attempt to complain. My second complaint has not returned any feedback, but obviously something happened because although Dr. Mo is/was in Dusseldorf he miraculously found a moment to step away from Twitter and do the job he is getting paid to do.
|In closing, I would only ask each and every one of you, regardless of where you are in the program to critique this course (honestly) and let Capella know you’re mad as Hell and you’re not going to take it anymore. If you don’t, he and others will continue to get paid to do nothing. The only thing I actually learned in this class was a little about polyinstantiation.
|I would certainly like to know your thoughts,
|Bill

I’m frustrated. I expected examples assignment wise. Or at least some assignment topics that are not so blah. Really! I received a 43 on 4-6! Thats my lowest grade in 20+ years of education. When my grade is that far off, its not me its the instructors expectations vs. my interpretation of the instructions.

The only feedback I have received is ‘your APA is wrong’ without being able to retrieve clarification. I am stumped and frustrated with how this course is being presented. My complaint is that, as a paying student, “what am I paying for?” to submit assignments whether good or bad, who cares, just submit and be done with the course? I do not agree with this scenario. As a student, I, we, signed an acknowledgment in the beginning of each course stating we understand and agree to the expectations…… As well the instructor states his or her expectations. I do not believe this instructor has upheld his part. And we get dinged for it?
